2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Comes After Mixed Reception
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a clearer game identity.
Ismailer expressed that the team is now refining the project with a revised focus, aiming to address community desires.
Trend of Key Hires
This announcement mirrors a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Below is the full text from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented creators we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that relationship to endure.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a clearer brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the criticism to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its promise to our players.
The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the new Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of conversations, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and experience in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having dedicated the recent years creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all looking forward to persist seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the months to ahead.
The President
Experience of the New Head
Brinkman currently holds the position of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, 31st Union presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative step forward on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description explains. "Take on the opponents with unique powers, risks, and obstacles that shift every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, risk it all, and hope your squad can secure victory? The choice is yours."
Project Ethos lacks an announced debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect additional details as development progresses.
