RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
