Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
